Microsoft 365 March 2026: Copilot Everywhere, Governance Locked Down

Microsoft’s late-February roadmap dump for March 2026 is packed – think deeper Copilot agents, Teams upgrades, and governance features admins can’t ignore anymore. As a platform engineer knee-deep in M365 tenants, this feels like Microsoft saying: “AI-first workflows are here, but sort your policies first.”

Copilot: Agents, Grounding, and Org Control

Copilot’s evolution is the headline. Agent Mode in PowerPoint now pulls from SharePoint libraries, OneDrive, emails, and Teams meetings to auto-generate decks – even executive summaries. Reference webpages or images directly; it’s available on desktop, web, and Mac.

Admins get tuning power: Anthropic models for select users, custom agents to the internal Agent Store, and branded footers. OneDrive gets a unified Copilot chat for file work. Governance shines with DLP for Copilot web searches and metadata triage in Purview alerts.

Pragmatic take: Test Agent Mode in a sandbox tenant now. It reduces deck-building drudgery but watch for data leakage – enable those DLP policies early.

Teams and Collaboration Boosts

Teams Rooms get a unified admin portal for inventory and auto-remediation on Pro devices. Meetings add resizable galleries during shares, annotations, and sensitivity label inheritance for recordings.

AI Interpreter handles real-time translation in calls; channel notifications centralise tenant-wide. Sensitivity labels now hit Loop notes too.

Action item: If hybrid work’s your jam, prioritise Rooms Pro remediation – silent failures kill meetings.

SharePoint, OneDrive, and Sharing Clampdown

SharePoint’s reimagined with intuitive IA and AI creation foundations; dark mode hits the Admin Center. OneDrive allows custom sync folder names to dodge path-length woes – auto-applies tenant-wide.

Big governance shift: Org-wide expiration for “People in your org” sharing links, now default once set. Hard delete for cleanup workflows incoming.

Engineer advice: Audit sharing links this week – expiration policies are low-hanging compliance fruit.

Purview, Viva, and the Rest

Purview dominates: AI-preps data in investigations, free Copilot indicators in IRM, and ZIP exports for DLP configs. Viva Pulse adds Copilot sentiment surveys with auto-targeting.

Outlook mobile gets sensitivity labels; Edge auto-opens Copilot for email links. Intune adds macOS custom compliance scripts.

Enabled-by-Default Traps and Retirements

Microsoft loves these – watch:

  • Profile cards for buildings/rooms/desks auto-appear in Copilot Chat.
  • Purview AI analysis kicks in as data lands.

No major retirements flagged yet, but legacy MFA’s long gone.
